Bishop becomes Life Fellow and Patron of The Order of St Hadrian

The Bishop of Manchester is to become a Life Fellow and Patron of The Order of St Hadrian of Canterbury. The presentation of a certificate of membership of the Order will take place at Parliament on 21 October 2009.

Bishop Doye, founder of the order, said: “This Award is in recognition of Bishop Nigel’s sensitive approach and the depth of spiritualilty in his work and ministry; and prevalently, the role he has played in the growing ecumenical relationship between the Black and Asian Churches and the historical denominations in the UK.”

The Order exists, to recognise and encourage excellence in the contributions of Minority Ethnic Churches to the community. As a Patron, Bishop Nigel’s presence will help to increase the public profile of the Order. Bishop Nigel will also be able to offer advice and counsel from time-to-time as may be needed.

The Bishop of Manchester, the Rt Revd Nigel McCulloch said; “It was thoughtful and generous of Bishop Doye and his episcopal colleagues to invite me to become a Fellow and Patron of The Order of St Hadrian of Canterbury. I am greatly humbled by this honour and also wish to express deep appreciation for the acknowledgment thereby fraternally given to us in the Church of England.”

About The Order of St Hadrian of Canterbury

The order of St Hadrian of Canterbury was founded by Bishop Doye Agama as a non chivalric, Pentecostal Christian and Educational Order based in the UK to uphold the memory of St Hadrian (The African), of Canterbury through the tenets of exemplary humility, excellence in service, and training up new generations to serve the church and community. The Order introduces some aspects of Monastic Life back into the Black Pentecostal Churches, and also particularly recognises outstanding community service by Christians from Black and Minority Ethnic backgrounds in the UK and beyond.

St Hadrian the African (d. 709/10), Abbot of the monastery of SS Peter & Paul (later St Augustine's) in Canterbury, turned down the pope's offer of the see for himself but was instrumental in securing the appointment of Theodore of Tarsus, a great ABC; feast day 9 January (all according to Oxford Dictionary of the Xtn Church, 3rd edn).
