First ordained member for William Temple Order

Published: 13 December 2011

The three current holders of the three sees once occupied by William Temple joined in the admission of Canon Dr Colin Craston as the first ordained member of the Order of William Temple.

The Order, founded to mark the 90th anniversary this year of the consecration of Temple as Bishop of Manchester, is to be awarded rarely and to honour those who have served with distinction both in the Diocese of Manchester and the wider mission of the Church of England.

The ceremony was held at Evening Prayer in All Saints Church, York and was attended by the House of Bishops.

The Archbishop of Canterbury paid tribute to Canon Craston's considerable role on the Anglican Consultative Council, which he served for 15 years, six of them as chairman; and the Archbishop of York spoke appreciatively of Canon Craston's ministry within the Church of England and as an outstanding parish priest in Bolton.

Canon Craston, who recently celebrated the 60th anniversary of his ordination, was then legally admitted to the Order by the Bishop and was vested with the scarf bearing the badge for the Order by the two Archbishops.

Canon Craston was accompanied by his wife, the Revd Brenda Craston.
