Holocaust survivors Jack, Mayer and Thea, lit six candles at Manchester Cathedral to mark the 70th anniversary of the start of World War 2. During the moving scene, a violinist played the theme from Schindler’s List.
The ceremony came at the opening of the Anne Frank + You Exhibition which runs from 4–29 September at Manchester Cathedral.
What makes the exhibition unique is the combination of the history of the Holocaust set within the context of the life and death of Anne Frank. It then powerfully confronts social issues in modern Britain.
Designed for adults and children over the age of ten, the exhibition starts in the historical section, which contains a replica of Anne's bedroom and the 'Holocaust Tunnel'. Here you will learn about the life of Anne Frank, her family and those who shared their hiding place in Amsterdam. Hear moving extracts from Anne's diary.
The contemporary panels of the exhibition are very different. They are bright, colourful and noisy! Each section has a theme that relates to a topic Anne wrote about in her diary: racism, conflict, freedom, identity and moral choices.
There are modern-day stories that relate to each theme and video interviews with young people of many backgrounds and religions.
Anne Frank [+you} will run from 4-29 September in Manchester Cathedral and is supported by Manchester City Council and The Cooperative.
Tours for school parties will take place throughout September and there will be associated fringe events. For more information and opening times, visit www.manchestercathedral.org
