A sponsored abseil down St Mary's church tower in Rawtenstall has helped raise vital funds for Vision's youth work in Rossendale.

Twenty two brave volunteers scaled the 70-ft tower to help raise money for Vision. If sponsorship money is collected over £2,000 will be added to this year’s total.

Vision is an ecumenical youth project which believes in young people, wanting to inspire them and encourage full use of their gifts and talents, and help build a more positive youth culture in Rossendale. It is run by a team of volunteers aged 18 to 26.

Twenty six local churches support the work of Vision, which varies from ‘Engage’, a weekly youth cafe on a local estate, to its work in local secondary schools, where 4500 teenagers take part in creative workshops, assemblies, lessons and lunchtime concerts. Each year there is a free open air concert at a local sports ground, which attracts about 3000 teenagers who are treated to music from live bands, DY’s dancers and a football ‘freestyle’.

Vision also hosts a ‘Refresh’ service every Sunday evening for over 100 young people, and Alpha courses for teenagers. It costs around £25,000 a year to carry out all these activities, so fundraising is very much an ongoing activity which all the churches in the deanery support.
