Reflections on Tampere

Published: 23 September 2011

The Finnish style of confirmation camp is a great opportunity for young people to learn about and grow in their faith, make new friends, sauna, worship, play games, eat a lot and have a huge amount of fun… all in the beautiful setting of Pattinniemi campsite just 30 minutes outside the city of Tampere.

Our group from parishes around the Rochdale Archdeaconry, took no time in making themselves at home, familiarising themselves with the cuisine, culture and language of Finland, and throwing themselves into the activities and experiences that this camp had to offer.

The week was simply brilliant. After breakfast each morning we joined together for a service in the beautiful little chapel where we followed the key Christian festivals. Much of our confirmation preparation teaching was done separately, but on several occasions we conquered the language barrier and looked at key issues such as ‘Who is Jesus?’ and ‘death and suffering’ with the Finnish young people. After lunch, a siesta, a quick ‘game of the day’ and a coffee we would have a meditation on the Gospel of Mark.

This proved to be quite the most exceptional, thoughtful, brilliant, caring and hilarious group of young people. For many, Tampere was the experience of a lifetime and it clearly had a huge impact on their lives as they prepare for confirmation. Our hope and prayer is that this experience will not only inspire them for this season of their lives, but also be a significant landmark to look back on in the years to come.

Canon Chris Bracegirdle, Bishop’s Senior Chaplain, adds, "As a model for learning and growing together, the confirmation camp is outstanding, and I can think of no better way to engage with young people as they come to this significant point in their journey of faith. For me, it was a memorable experience and one I cannot recommend too highly".
