Brigade trumpets its faith

Published: 11 November 2011

Over 500 members of the Church Lads’ and Church Girls’ Brigade gathered in Manchester for a parade and service at the cathedral to celebrate the 120th anniversary of the founding of the Church Lads’ Brigade by Walter Mallock Gee in 1891.

The Brigade is the uniformed youth organisation of the Church of England. Brigade Companies welcome children and young people aged from 5 to 21 years, forming friendships between young people, children and adults, in a caring and safe environment. It helps young people and children to grow in confidence, develop their skills and abilities, and work together, showing care and concern for others.

To mark the anniversary, Brigade members, leaders and bands from Chester, Chorley, Leicester, Lichfield, Liverpool and Manchester paraded from Fennel Street and Cathedral Street to the cathedral, for a service of thanksgiving and rededication led by the Bishop of Manchester and the Brigade’s Chaplain, the Rt Revd Jack Nicholls. The service was followed by a march past and the salute was taken.

The Brigade encourages young people and children to explore their spirituality and respond to the Christian faith, encouraging the development of moral values and respect for the environment. Its largest concentration in England is in Manchester Diocese.
