God of the GAP at St Mary's

Published: 02 December 2011

God's Amazing Puppets (GAP) is a youth puppetry group based at St Mary's, Haughton Green, Denton.

Established in 2008 by two youth leaders, about a dozen children attend weekly to learn the art of puppetry, performance skills and prop making, and rehearse for upcoming services, outreach and community events.

GAP has performed at many different venues from churches to schools to carnivals to residential care homes. It is in demand all over the Manchester area. One of the highlights of the last year was taking part in the local council's ‘Party in the Park’, working with special needs teenagers at Melland High School, and the annual St Peter's Pet Service where the old adage "never work with children and animals" (and puppets!) was certainly not adhered to!

GAP delivers assemblies, workshops, and after-school clubs and presented a puppet nativity play for Wellspring at the Stockport Plaza Theatre, as well as numerous Christmas celebrations at St Mary's.

Revd Martin Dowland says, “God took a simple idea and has blessed this ministry immeasurably more than we imagined. He continues to inspire and uphold the group as it grows, evolves and seeks new challenges”.

If you would like GAP to play a part in your youth ministry, outreach or events - or if your church would like advice and training on setting up a puppet ministry, contact Helen on 07964 994008 or check out www.gappuppets.com. No challenge is too big or too small!
