Ten young people and five adult leaders from Holy Trinity, Horwich spent four weeks working in the parishes of Okathitu and Ruacana in Namibia as a way of further developing their 14-year-old links.
The visit proved a lifechanging experience for the young people. They spent their time working in three link schools and five church–run kindergartens in the Okathitu parish. Through their impressive range of talents and subject expertise, they were able to make a real impact in the schools and kindergartens, by working alongside teachers and taking lessons in their specialist subjects.
Another task was to paint, inside and out, four of the simple buildings which house the kindergarten children. They also found time to introduce and use the impressive amount of learning equipment which Holy Trinity had taken for the children.
Youth members Elliott and Bethany even preached the sermon at the parish churches of Okathitu and Ruacana.
Every member of the group has spoken eloquently about their experience of living for a while in a developing country. They coped admirably in very different conditions from those they are accustomed to, and are now more appreciative of the material things they took for granted. Some are determined to return to Namibia 'under their own steam' in the future.
