Back to Church Sunday began in Manchester in 2004 with the message ‘Missing You’, and spread to Wakefield in 2005, nine Church of England dioceses in 2006 and 20 in 2007. On Back to Church Sunday 2008, people in 3,000 churches invited and welcomed back 37,000 friends.
Research by the Diocese of Lichfield suggest that six months after running Back to Church Sunday, 12-15% of people who returned to church had become regular members. Others are still in touch with their inviting churches and may come again at Christmas or to a social event.
