Christian basics or enquirers’ groups are a very effective way of doing evangelism. They take people at a steady pace and give them lots of time and space to think and ask questions.
Some years ago, CPAS produced a course, written and devised by Canon Robin Gamble, called Start. It came out of Robin's parish evangelism in Bradford, so is well suited to northern and inner-city people, although lots of suburban churches are also now using it.
People say that unlike most basics courses it starts right at the beginning; that it is very flexible; is well-suited to smaller groups; is easily do-able by most churches; and, being only six weeks long, is less demanding than some others.
Lots of churches use Start stand-alone, but more and more are now using it as an introduction or first step into Alpha or Emmaus.
