What is Traidcraft?Traidcraft fights poverty through trade, helping people in developing countries to transform their lives. Established in 1979 as a Christian response to poverty, it is the UK's leading fairtrade organisation. It runs development programmes in some of the poorest countries in the world, and campaigns to bring about trade justice.
More than a billion people are fighting to survive on less than $1 a day, but Traidcraft believes it doesn’t have to be this way. Change is possible, and by transforming trade it believes it can - and does - transform lives.
Giving producers a fair price for their goods is a critical element of fairtrade, enabling individual producers to provide for their families and communities and to invest in welfare projects - schools, health clinics, easily accessible clean water, and sanitation. The community together chooses how to spend the fairtrade premium.
In the last 30 years Traidcraft has come a long way. From a small selection of jute products from Bangladesh, it now offers a range of products from over 100 fairtrade producer groups in 30 countries. 3.4 million people benefit from the charity’s development work. From its beginning as a small number of committed supporters, there are now thousands of Fair Traders, donors, customers, campaigners, shareholders, speakers and retailers.
Traidcraft does more than just sell fairtrade products. It
Has your church signed up for fairtrade? Does it run a Traidcraft stall? If you would like advice or a talk on how fairtrade helps, contact the Task Group via Sue Heil at Church House on 0161 828 1445.
