The Archbishop of York has appointed the Revd Canon Sarah Bullock, Rector of St Edmund, Whalley Range and St James with St Clement, Moss Side, Manchester, as the new Archdeacon of York. Canon Bullock will succeed the Ven Richard Seed, who retired in October 2012.
The Revd Canon Sarah Bullock said, “I’m thrilled to be taking up the role of the Archdeacon of York. I’ll be encouraging the churches in the Archdeaconry of York to continue to grow and become more generous churches that help one another and their communities. I’ll be helping the churches particularly with their buildings, finance and legal matters, and serving them as best I can. I’ll miss Manchester and parish life greatly, but it’s a real honour to be able to serve the people in the Diocese of York, and I look forward to getting to know them.”
The Archbishop of York, the Most Revd Dr John Sentamu said, "I am delighted that Sarah has agreed to be the next Archdeacon of York. She is a very gifted priest with a wide range of experience. She has a lively and engaging faith coupled with a wise pastoral attitude that means she will be a great asset in these exciting times in our diocese. She has a clear grasp of our diocesan dynamic vision of Generous Churches Making and Nurturing Disciples. I pray for Sarah and her family that they will settle quickly on this side of the Pennines, and that together we will be delighted by what we see God doing in this Diocese of York.”
The Bishop of Middleton and the Bishop of Bolton have welcomed the news: “We are delighted to hear of Sarah’s appointment. We will miss the significant contribution she has made to the diocese. She will bring many gifts to her new role. Her warm humour, practical approach and sensitive pastoral skills will make her an excellent Archdeacon of York.”
Canon Bullock studied for the priesthood in Durham, and was ordained in 1993. Since 2009, she has been Bishop’s Advisor for Women’s Ministry in the Diocese of Manchester, and a Canon of Manchester Cathedral since 2007. From 2010-2012 she was Dean of the City and Borough of Manchester, where she sought to promote the civic role of the Church of England through partnerships with the public, private, voluntary and community sectors. Since April 2012, she has been Area Dean of Hulme, a complex and diverse deanery which covers the city centre, including Moss Side and Hulme and suburban Chorlton as well as the Central Manchester Hospitals and the Universities. She is also a member of the General Synod of the Church of England.
Canon Bullock is married to Peter, a physics teacher, and they have a son, Joseph, who is a student. The date when she will take up the role of Archdeacon will be announced in due course.
