Scargill Golden Jubilee

Published: 08 June 2009

Almost 50 years to the day since Scargill House, near Kettlewell in the Yorkshire Dales, was dedicated as a Community and Conference Centre, there is to be an Open Day and Service of Celebration and Dedication on Saturday June 20th.

It was on June 27th 1959 that a service took place in Kettlewell Parish Church, and people then walked to Scargill House for the dedication by the then Bishop of Bradford (later Archbishop of Canterbury), the Rt Revd Donald Coggan.

When Scargill House closed its doors last summer, largely as a result of major financial problems, few might have imagined that these celebrations would be happening.

Commenting on this, the Bishop of Bolton, the Rt Revd Chris Edmondson, who is Chairman of the Scargill Movement Council said:

“Following the purchase of the House earlier this year by the newly formed Scargill Movement, this 50th anniversary gives a wonderful opportunity to both look back with thanksgiving and forward with anticipation. We know that people are coming from far and wide to be part of what we believe will be a very special day”.

Everyone is welcome, and the house and grounds will be open from 10.00am, with various activities going on through the day. The climax will be a Service of Celebration and Dedication led by the Bishops of Bolton and Bradford.
