Anne Frank would have turned 80 years old today. To commemorate the anniversary and help raise awareness of her story and of the millions who suffered in the Holocaust, the Dean and Lord Mayor planted a tree outside Manchester Cathedral.
In addition to planting the tree the Cathedral is to host a major Ann Frank multimedia exhibition in September, delivering the messages of Anne’s diary for young people today.
The exhibition, called Anne Frank [+you}, presents contemporary issues including racism, the right to wear religious symbols, bullying and the plight of child soldiers. The words and ideals of this young girl from 60 years ago remind us that we need to respect each other and appreciate and understand each other's differences.
Through audio-visual presentations, visitors will discover the concerns Anne expressed in her celebrated diary and their relevance to teenagers’ lives in 21st-century Britain.
The Dean of Manchester, the Very Revd Rogers Govender, said, “Anne Frank was a very special girl who is still an inspiration to people today. Although she knew what was happening to her Jewish friends and neighbours, and even though she was trapped in her hiding place, Anne always believed in the true goodness of people. It is an honour to plant a tree in her memory at Manchester Cathedral to mark what would be her 80th birthday.”
Anne Frank [+you} will run from 4-29 September in Manchester Cathedral and is supported by Manchester City Council.
Tours for school parties will take place throughout September and there will be associated fringe events.
