As in the famous ‘70’s hit by John Paul Young, love was certainly in the air once again when St Margaret’s Church staged this year’s Love Burnage festival. Over 1000 people turned up to enjoy a free family fun day in the church grounds and parish centre.
In preparation for the festival, Revd Ian Thompson and visiting evangelist Dave Glover gave assemblies at local primary schools. Dave’s skills in story-telling caught the imagination of children and teachers alike, and many turned out with their families for the fun day.
Highlights included music from a local brass band; free burgers, cream teas and halal food; a fantastic themed display of flowers in church; and lots of fun activities for children ranging from eco-friendly ‘junk sculpting’ and face painting, to bouncy castles, ‘beat-the-goalie’ competition and a falconry display.
“People asked us why it was all free. Our response was that it was our gift to the community as an expression of God’s love for the people of Burnage”, said Ian.
“Since then, we have been running a START Course for people who expressed an interest in exploring further the basics of the Christian faith –some people are already showing encouraging signs of opening their live to the love of God in Jesus.”
