Congratulations also to St Hilda’s in Oldham which is the first school in Manchester to receive the Leading Parent Partnership Award, in recognition of its success in involving and engaging parents in their children’s education.
All the children at St Hilda’s speak English as a second language, and this is a particular barrier when communicating with parents, most of whom were not educated in the UK themselves.
Headteacher, Gill Pursey, explains, “We have developed lots of ways to include parents, such as appointing more bilingual staff, using learning mentors and encouraging parents to learn alongside their children both during and after school. We have found that the more parents engage with us and take advantage of extra curricular activities, the better their children achieve in the classroom."
