On the eve of a demonstration by the English Defence League (EDL), Manchester Cathedral will host a vigil to celebrate an inclusive and tolerant vision of the city. Civic and faith leaders will be joined in the cathedral by representatives from mainstream political parties, trades unions and community groups to declare that Manchester is a welcoming city, enriched by its diversity, and rejecting the divisive agenda of the EDL. They will also call on all Mancunians to stand in solidarity with the Muslim community who are being targeted by the English Defence league.
Those attending will be invited to add their names to the Hope not hate pledge.
The vigil will take place at 4.00pm on Friday 9 October.
