Investing in marriage ministry

Published: 22 January 2010

Manchester Diocese is getting behind the Church of England’s Weddings Project, which aims to attract more couples to marry in church, build a good relationship with them and care for them beyond the marriage ceremony.

Building on the introduction of the Marriage Measure last year, the Weddings Project was commissioned by the Archbishops' Council and has been tried and tested in two dioceses over the last year - Bradford and Oxford. It has developed resources to support the Church’s ministry to couples marrying in church.

Manchester is now joining the Project. We will receive an ‘Investor in Weddings’ mark as a sign that we are is focused on this area of ministry for mission.

What does it mean for churches?

Manchester clergy will receive extra training and resources to help them provide the best possible ministry to marriage couples, from the very first contact, through marriage preparation and planning the big day, right through to the marriage ceremony and beyond to celebrating the first anniversary.

The aims of the project are to help attract couples to marriage in church, build a relationship with them and care for them and their guests so that

  • They will assess their experience as ‘good’, ‘very good’ or ‘excellent’.
  • They will recommend the experience to a friend.
  • More of them will want to come back to church again or to become part of the local Christian community.

The resources will help busy clergy make weddings personal and memorable for those involved, and resource them to reach out to the community beyond the wedding day.

More information and resources will be available in the Resources for Ministers section and at www.yourchurchwedding.org/project
