Clergy Shoeshine - order your posters!

Published: 02 February 2010

The diocese is providing resources for any clergy that would like to offer to run a ShoeShine Event on Maundy Thursday.

This is a great opportunity for ministers to be out and about in their communities, serving people and taking the message of Easter out onto the streets.

People may be a little surprised to see clergy offering to spend time cleaning shoes on Thursday 1 April, but this is no April fool!

Jesus said, “the first shall be last….those who lead shall serve.” Jesus demonstrated this by washing the feet of his followers the night before he was crucified. Cleaning people’s shoes is a modern twist on Jesus’ command to serve people.

Resources available

We can provide A1 or A2 laminated posters (which can be stuck to a board or nearby wall) for £6 each. Postcards are also available free of charge.

Tell us how many posters you want to order and how many postcards you’d like by 15 March. Download an order form below or email Lesley Whittaker (below).

We will bring the posters and postcards to Manchester Cathedral for the Renewal of Vows and Blessing of Oils on Monday March 29th.

How the Shoeshine went down in 2009

The Bishops of Manchester and Bolton and other clergy did shoe shining in 2009 and found it a very valuable exercise. Bishop Chris said,

“The response was very encouraging. Some people were intrigued. It gave us a chance to have a great conversation with people so they knew where we are coming from. It was a really good exercise. One customer told me of losing his job as an architect. Another customer, a Muslim man, kept saying to me “you are so kind” – he found it very moving”.
