Bishop speaks on Digital Economy Bill

Published: 09 February 2010

The Rt Revd Nigel McCulloch Lord Bishop of Manchester made a speech yesterday opposing amendment 241B of Clause 31 of the Digital Economy Bill.

The Bishop spoke of his concerns that readvertising the national commercial analogue radio licences only a few years before the proposed switchover to digital would send confusing messages to the industry and listeners. The Clause was later agreed, unamended.

The Bishop also made a speech during Lord De Mauley's amendment 246 to the Digital Economy Bill. The Bishop gave his support to the amendment but mentioned his concerns over the section relating to discriminatory language, highlighting the issue over comedy performances, theological and evangelical material which might be caught by the wording of the amendment. The Bishop suggested a case by case basis was needed under the guidance of the BBFC. The Amendment was withdrawn at the end of the debate.
