World Cup service and community festival

St Margaret's and St George's in Heywood held a special eucharist to bring the two churches together using the Rainbow Nation theme on the eve of the World Cup final.

Touching on issues of Nation, Racism and Diversity, they put together an informal service with a parade using flags and banners. People were asked to come in football shirts or scarves, or in national dress or costume.

Reflecting on the Gospel reading, Revd John Geary used the sermon to identify all the nations represented by the people attending, asking them to mark on a world map where their families had originated from. This showed that the people of the two churches came from many parts of the UK and Europe, but also Russia, the Ukraine, Hong Kong, Columbia, North America, the Carribean, New Zealand; and in Africa: The Congo, Nigeria, Sierra Leone and Ghana, who themselves had a very good run in the World Cup.

Prayers were said for the world and all its people, of every race or creed.

Following the service, a commnuity festival took place on the school playing fields next door to St Margaret's Church.
