The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, commissioned dozens of young green apostles from schools across Greater Manchester today when he visited the city. He asked the children to go back to their communities with the message that our future depends on caring for the environment and reducing our carbon footprint.
The Archbishop said “Your efforts may appear very small, but what you do for the environment, for the poor and the strugglers, it makes a difference.”
The Archbishop’s visit was part of an event at the Cathedral called Arks Apostles Action. Event organiser Revd John Hughes said: “The idea is simple - our buildings are the ark, we are the apostles or messengers, and we can take practical action to reduce damage to the environment.”
During the event members of local organisations which are at the forefront of encouraging us all to care for the environment assembled a giant rainbow bearing the message ‘I set my bow in the clouds as a sign of the covenant between me and the earth’ (Gen. 9.13).
Churches shared their stories of becoming Ecocongregations, and the children presented their findings of doing an energy audit of the cathedral building.
