Canon Slade's 'Cross of Nails' honour

Published: 02 December 2011

Canon Slade School in Bolton has been appointed an International Cross of Nails school.

The Community of the Cross of Nails began following the destruction of Coventry Cathedral in 1940 to work for peace and reconciliation and now has 150 centres for reconciliation around the world.

For a school to become a member of the community, it has to be able to show that the principle of reconciliation is at the heart of its life and ethos. Canon Slade was commended both for the way it promoted reconciliation within the school and also for the large amount of work it does to support reconciliation, peace and justice in the local community and in the wider world.

Thirty pupils travelled to Coventry Cathedral as representatives of the school where they received the Cross of Nails at a special service. They were accompanied by Bishop Mark, The Head of the school, Philip Williamson, and representatives of the Governing Body and Staff. While there, they were given a guided tour of the old and new cathedrals, climbed the 180 steps to the top of the tower and lit candles as they remembered those who lost their lives when Coventry was bombed during the second world war as well as all the other centres working for peace and reconciliation in the world.
