Training for Governors

The Board of Education organises courses for all types of governors. These courses are generally held at Church House, Manchester. In addition officers are happy to respond to the training needs of individual schools or groups of schools and will come to a suitable local venue to deliver training.

Courses offered locally have included The Strategic Role of Governors; Monitoring and Supported Self-Review. Officers have also been able to assist schools in preparation for SIAS (Statutory Inspection of Anglican Schools) inspections with an ‘Ethos Health Check’.

Officers are available to consult on a wide range of issues including personnel matters, buildings, admissions and appeals and any other area of concern.

Training courses and consultancy are free to schools that have subscribed to the diocesan Service Level Agreement. Charges will be made to all other schools for individual items.

Please consult in the first instance: Will Leeson or Chris Shelley.

Supported Self Review

Effective Governing Bodies make successful Church Schools is a comprehensive supported review of Governing Body working practices in Church of England Schools. It aims to provide an evaluation process which will impact on the role of the governing body within the school. It enables governors to gain an accurate picture of the major strengths of the school, areas for some development and any which are a priority for development. It will also help in the completion and updating of the School Evaluation Form (SEF).

The National Society also publishes a ‘toolkit’ to help schools undertake self-review. This is particularly helpful in preparing for Section 48 SIAS inspections.
