Meet some of our 40 new clergy

A total of 40 new clergy will be ordained at two services at Manchester Cathedral over the coming days. The Bishop of Manchester, Dr David Walker, said, “It is an enormous privilege for me to ordain our new deacons as they embark on this new stage of their ministry to our churches across Manchester and beyond. It has been inspiring to be part of their journey towards this great day, and I look forward to celebrating with them as they prepare to serve in our diverse communities.”
Among the new deacons are married couple Fran and Dave Griffiths, who will both serve at St Thomas Church, Kirkholt. They said:
“We attended a Pioneer Panel, and both of us were recommended for Ordained Pioneer Ministry. We trained at St Mellitus College in Liverpool, which we have absolutely loved. We will soon take up a Pioneer Curacy in Rochdale. We have learnt that God is full of unexpected surprises!”
Also to be ordained deacon is Ian Hepburn, a paramedic, who will become a curate at Bolton Parish Church.
Ian said, “I enjoyed working for the NHS in Greater Manchester as a paramedic for 14 years, getting out and about, meeting lots of different people, and the satisfaction of helping. I remember being on a treadmill in the gym before work and thinking, ‘I’m running in completely the wrong race here’. Encouragements from family and friends and church slowly built up, culminating in a line from a sermon which I couldn’t get out of my head, ‘Don’t miss out on the opportunity to spend your life on God’s work!’”
