The Diocese of Manchester has appointed a new Director of Education. Deborah Smith, currently Deputy Director of Education for the Diocese of Carlisle, comes to the post with more than 30 years of experience in the education sector, where she has provided strategic leadership and operational management in a number of different roles.
The Diocesan Board of Education provides statutory functions and advice to the governing bodies of its 191 church schools. It also has an extensive programme of work with children and young people in our churches. As Director of Education for the diocese, Deborah will promote the distinctive character of Church of England schools in the diocese, including religious education and collective worship. She will also help to continuously improve the overall leadership and management of church schools.
Deborah Smith has been involved in education throughout her adult life, working in both urban and rural settings as a teacher, senior lecturer, Chief Officer of a Christian charity supporting churches in working with schools, as well as more recently as Carlisle Diocese Deputy Director of Education.
She has worked in a variety of educational settings, ranging from Nursery to Primary schools, through to a Higher Educational establishment. Outside of the educational sector Deborah played a key role in charity leadership, working alongside schools and churches.
Deborah said, “The Church of England Vision for Education (2016) resonates with my own philosophy that church schools exist to support those of the Christian faith, those of other faiths and those of no faith to experience ‘life in all its fullness’. I am passionate about education and the value of church school education.
“I am excited by the Diocese of Manchester’s vision to be a Church for a Different World, with the focus on building communities through church and schools working closely together. I am very much looking forward to taking up the post of Director of Education, supporting schools as they serve children, families and communities.”
Chair of the Manchester Diocesan Board of Education, The Rt Revd Mark Davies, Bishop of Middleton, said, “I am delighted that Deborah Smith has been appointed to be Manchester’s new Diocesan Director of Education. Deborah comes to this role, not only with years of varied experience, but also with many God-given gifts and a deep sense of Christian vocation. She is well equipped to fulfil the role of DDE at an exciting time in the life of the diocese. With colleagues in our schools, academies and chaplaincies, together with the Education Department and the Board of Education, I look forward to working with Deborah as we continue to serve our children and young people, their families, carers, churches and communities.”
Deborah, is married to Paul, Lead Evangelist for the Liverpool Church Army Centre of Mission. The couple live in Liverpool and have two grown up children.
She will take up her appointment in November 2019.
