Churches open for Heritage Open Days

Churches across Greater Manchester and Rossendale are preparing to open for special tours, exhibitions and activities as they share their treasures as part of Heritage Open Days.

There’s so much going on at churches across the region. Why not plan a day out and pop along to some of the Heritage Open Day events near you? Hear the stories of residents, tour the fascinating buildings, marvel at the stained glass and clamber up towers, where offered, for unusual views over the countryside.

Heritage Open Days take place from 13 to 22 September 2019. Check out the church websites and Facebook pages for full details of local opening days and times near you.

Here are some of the forthcoming events:

Bury Parish Church: Climb up to the gallery, visit the bell tower, view the records, registers and vestments and enjoy refreshments with a Victorian theme in the coffee shop.

St James, Daisy Hill: Follow the snail trail, discover the Commonwealth war graves, marvel at the Morris & Co stained glass and attend a brilliant coffee concert!

St Mary Droylsden will showcase its centenary commemorations of the end of WW1. Local historian Barry Dunnett undertook a special pilgrimage to the final resting places of the 46 people listed on the church’s war memorial in the Great War. He visited war graves in France and placed a memorial cross on each one. Photographs and a video will be on display on 14 September between 9.30am and 3pm.

St Lawrence, Denton will be running choral workshops on Friday 13 September with conductors from the Halle Choir.

St Nicholas, Newchurch: check out the Meyer and Co stained glass, climb the bell tower, enjoy craft activities for children, inspect the registers and find out about the churchyard restoration project.

St Mary, Prestwich: New Heritage Interpretation boards will help you check out the progress of the restoration project at the Grade 1 listed north Manchester church.

Please check the parish websites and Facebook entries for full details of opening days and times.
