Changes to Marriage Registration and the Sham Marriage Referral Scheme

First published on: 24th February 2021

Two significant changes to marriage law in England are coming into force over the next few months.

From 4 May 2021

The long anticipated changes to the way marriages are registered will come into force. These changes are outlined in the 10th Edition of the Clergy Newsletter.

From 1 July  2021

Changes to the Sham Marriage Referral Scheme will come into force. Attached is a document which the Faculty Office has prepared in relation to these changes together with the Home Office Q&A document referred to.

Please note that the GOV.UK tool  for checking the immigration status of marriage couples using a share code can be found at  https://www.gov.uk/check-immigration-status, rather than at https://www.gov.uk/view-prove-immigation-status, as indicated in the guidance note.

Further training in respect of both of these changes will be arranged shortly.
