The youth work department within the Board of Education aims to assist youth leaders in many aspects of their ministry among young people in an informal education setting. The department is staffed by the Diocesan Youth Officer (full-time), and the Youth Officer Assistant (a part -time intern). There are four main strands to the support that it provides:
- Resourcing: including the provision of teaching materials and programme ideas (both written and visual) that cater for a variety of young people’s learning styles, together with information, advice and guidance on many aspects of work with young people including good practice and policy, setting up a group or project, and forthcoming events of interest.
- Training: addressing many of the key issues relating to work with young people. The department’s training portfolio enables youth leaders to access workshops and courses at a variety of levels, up to Higher Education level 1. Training can be delivered locally and is tailored to the specific needs of the parish or project.
- Events for young people: providing opportunities for young people to learn, grow, think, have fun and meet with other groups across the diocese. Currently the department organises 11-14s worship events, a confirmation camp in Finland, an annual trip to the Walsingham Youth Pilgrimage and a pilgrimage to the Taize community in France.
- Developing new youth work initiatives: involving more in-depth support for churches as they develop fresh ways of working positively with young people in the local area.
In addition to the information provided on this site, staff are readily available to offer advice and support by telephone and/or through visits to parishes.
