Area Deans

This section contains information that is issued to Area Deans and Lay Chairs on their appointment.

The role of the Area Dean is to be a partner with the Bishop and the Bishop's Staff in the mission and ministry of the deanery. The Area Dean has a strategic role in the diocese, helping to shape planning, policy and deployment, drawing on their local knowledge. Within the deanery, the Area Dean in partnership with the Lay Chair is the key person under God to provide vision, leadership and pastoral care.

Lay chairs are an invaluable part of the diocesan team as they bring with them enormous expertise, wisdom, and knowledge about local churches in their deanery. They bring the perspective of laity to the strategic planning of the deanery and diocese. Under the leadership of the Bishop and together with the area dean, their task is to further the mission and ministry of the deanery, and to bring the diocese and the wider church to the deanery.

The relationship between the lay chair and the area dean is crucial to the success of the both positions.
