Bishop David Authorises Lay Ministers at Manchester Cathedral

Family, friends and supporting ministers gathered at the Cathedral for our Annual Celebration of Authorised Lay Ministry, led by Bishop David.

This weekend – amid torrential rain and a bus strike – family, friends and supporting ministers gathered at the Cathedral for our Annual Celebration of Authorised Lay Ministry, led by Bishop David, where 21 new ALMs were authorised and over 70 were re-authorised in their ministries. The Revd Phil Cansdale, Head of Mission and Ministry, spoke of the importance of unseen ministry in our churches and reminded us all of our calling to follow Jesus’ model of servant leadership. It was brilliant to see so many undertaking training and then being released into these roles in their parishes.

We are privileged to have around 280 Authorised Lay Ministers carrying out a variety of ministries in their parishes. Authorised Lay Ministers are lay people who follow a call to take on an active role in their church in a particular area. They participate in training throughout the year leading up to their authorisation, after which they are formally commissioned by the Bishop of Manchester to carry out a mutually agreed ministry role within their parish. This authorisation lasts for three years but can be reviewed, updated and renewed. Our Authorised Lay Ministers are a gift to mission and ministry in their local churches, and this service offered a great opportunity to acknowledge and encourage them in their roles.

Celebratory photos had to be taken in the Cathedral due to the weather, but this did not dampen the celebration and enthusiasm!
