Manchester Cathedral Awarded National Lottery Grant
Manchester Cathedral has been awarded a grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund to launch its ambitious new project, Our Cathedral, Our City.

Manchester Cathedral has been awarded a significant development grant of £571,883 from The National Lottery Heritage Fund to launch its ambitious new project, Our Cathedral, Our City – a bold initiative to reimagine the Cathedral’s role in the heart of Manchester.
This funding marks the first step towards a transformative £4 million project that will improve access, deepen community engagement, and ensure the Cathedral’s long-term environmental and financial sustainability.
Rooted in over 600 years of history, Manchester Cathedral is a living symbol of the city’s resilience and diversity. The Our Cathedral, Our City project will:
- Co-create a new heritage narrative with local communities, reflecting both historic and contemporary voices.
- Open up access to the Cathedral’s architectural and spiritual heritage.
- Improve facilities for visitors, volunteers, and worshippers.
- Make worship, ceremonial traditions, and community stories accessible to all.
- Unlock 600 years of archival material, inviting the public to explore and shape the stories they tell.
Dean Rogers Govender said:
“We are delighted to have received this initial grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Thanks to National Lottery players, we can develop our plans to improve access and facilities, and join with our community in sharing and interpreting our rich mutual heritage.”
Pilot events will be held in the coming months, including special services, exhibitions, and archive explorations. Details and invitations will be available at www.manchestercathedral.org
