Please Be Aware of Fraud

We want to make churches aware of a situation that has occurred again in our diocese. A man has approached a church immediately after service on Sunday, asking for money. In the most recent incident, he requested £47 in cash, claiming it was for a train ticket. His reasons for needing cash were inconsistent and raised concerns, although he appeared convincing.

We suspect that this is the same man that has targeted churches in the North West region in the past stating that he needs funds for fares, to replace a stolen wallet, provide petrol to return to Scotland or has asked for a loan to help with house repairs.

This time, the individual gave the name Darren O’Keeffe and is described as a white male, approximately in his late 30s to early 40s, around 5’7″ in height, with short brown hair, a Scottish accent, and dressed in casual smart clothing.

Please exercise caution if approached in a similar way. We suggest that you:

  • Do not give cash under any circumstances.
  • Never meet anyone alone at church.
  • Redirect individuals to organisations equipped to provide assistance (e.g., local charities, food banks, travel support services).
  • Keep a list of local support organisations at the church entrance for quick reference.

If you have any concerns or encounter a similar situation, please report immediately to the police and the Safeguarding Team.
