Bells Ring Again at Christ Church Healey

After a long restoration journey, the bells of Christ Church Healey in Rochdale are ringing once again, and the parish is now looking for new bell ringers to help keep the tradition going.

The restoration project began in 2014, when serious erosion and corroded ironwork were discovered in the church spire. Supported by a National Lottery Heritage Fund grant, the upper section of the spire was carefully dismantled stone by stone, repaired and rebuilt. A new steel frame was also installed to support the bells.

Water ingress and financial pressures brought further setbacks, making the restoration a much longer journey than originally hoped.

Ray Newell, one of the churchwardens, said: “Now, with repairs completed as far as funds allow, our volunteer ringers have brought the joyful sound of bells back to worship.”

Churchwarden Lynsey Toolan spoke of the emotional moment the bells rang again, alongside Tower Captain Ray Clegg, who previously served as churchwarden for many years.

“We’ve faced many challenges over the last few years to get to this point. To hear the bells ring again was a very special and emotional moment for both me and Tower Captain Ray Clegg,” she said.

A celebration service with Bishop Mark brought the church community together to give thanks and mark the occasion. With the bells ringing once again, the service was an opportunity to celebrate the dedication of everyone who had helped make their return possible. Food and fellowship followed the service as the celebrations continued.

The return of the bells has also received a warm response on social media. One visitor wrote, “thanks for making me feel so welcomed – even with a dog”, while another said, “lovely sound, great that they are back”.

The parish has thanked everyone whose patience, generosity and hard work have helped make the restoration possible, with special thanks to Helen Rigby and the team of bell ringers.
