The Church of England has encouraged each diocese, as part of their parish renewal and church planting strategy, to prayerfully explore the possibility of starting a new worshipping community as part of the “mixed ecology” of church that shapes, informs and grows local churches. As a diocese, we aim to start 40 NWCs over the next few years and invite parishes to prayerfully consider if this is for them.

Why are they needed?

Rooted in worship, prayer, and mission, NWCs create new pathways for those not currently connected to church. Gathered around Christ and connected to the wider Church, they enable communities of faith to emerge in new places, among new people, in new ways through creativity, hospitality, and faithful witness to the gospel.

Who can participate?

NWCs are often led by clergy and lay people with a vision and passion for starting something new. When a church seeks to form an NWC, lay people should play a central role as part of the core leadership team. Any church with a vision and passion for exploring new possibilities can participate.
