New Canons Installed and Archdeacon Simon Cook Welcomed at Manchester Cathedral
Manchester Cathedral welcomed new Canons during Choral Evensong on Monday evening, including the installation of the Venerable Simon Cook, Archdeacon of Salford and Manchester, as a Supernumerary Canon.
Manchester Cathedral welcomed new Canons during Choral Evensong on Monday evening, including the installation of the Venerable Simon Cook, Archdeacon of Salford and Manchester, as a Supernumerary Canon.
The service brought together clergy, lay leaders, family members and friends from across the diocese and beyond to celebrate the ministry and service of those being installed.
Installed during the service were:
- The Revd Canon Kirsty Screeton
- The Revd Canon Sue Walker
- Canon Jess Leaf
- Canon Donna Myers
- Canon Rosemary H Taylor
- The Revd Canon Jonathan Bramwell
In his introduction to the service, Bishop David spoke about the historic role of Canons as advisers and supporters to the bishop, offering wisdom, theological reflection and experience from across the life of the Church. He noted that Manchester’s Canons represent a broad range of ministries and backgrounds, helping to ensure that diocesan leadership is informed by the richness and diversity of the Church’s life and mission.
Preaching for the occasion, Archdeacon Simon reflected on the challenges and opportunities of new beginnings as he embarks on his new ministry. He thanked those who have supported him throughout his journey of faith and ministry and paid tribute to his predecessor, Archdeacon Rachel Mann.
Reflecting on the readings from Exodus and Hebrews, Simon explored the majesty and holiness of God, reminding the congregation that faith is not simply about careful planning and preparation but about responding to God’s call with trust and courage.
Speaking about the Christian vocation to share the gospel, he encouraged those gathered not merely to make plans but to act on the good news they have received.
He said: “The God who loves us, the God who calls and chose us, who supports and upholds us in our walk with him, also calls us to be accountable to him for the lives we live, the way we share the love and forgiveness and blessing we have received with others.”
He concluded with an invitation to respond afresh to God’s call, reminding the congregation: “Our God is an awesome God and he wants you to know him.”
The service also included prayers for Archdeacon Simon in his new ministry, for the newly installed Canons, for Bishop David and the wider Diocese of Manchester, and for communities across the region and beyond.
Following the service, guests gathered in the cathedral to celebrate the occasion and congratulate the newly installed Canons.
