Safeguarding Sunday is an opportunity for churches across the Diocese of Manchester to pause, reflect and reaffirm their commitment to creating places where everyone can feel safe, valued and respected.
Led nationally by the Christian safeguarding charity Thirtyone:eight, Safeguarding Sunday encourages churches to celebrate the positive work taking place to protect children, young people and adults at risk, while recognising that safeguarding is an ongoing responsibility for the whole Church.
Safeguarding is not simply about policies and procedures. It is about how we live out God’s love and care for one another. Every church has a role to play in creating environments where people can flourish, concerns can be raised, and those who have been harmed are listened to and supported.
Safeguarding Sunday provides an opportunity to:
- Give thanks for those who serve in safeguarding roles.
- Raise awareness of safeguarding within congregations and communities.
- Encourage everyone to understand how they can contribute to safer churches.
- Reflect on lessons learned and areas for continued improvement.
- Demonstrate a commitment to safeguarding as an essential part of Christian ministry.
Love Protects
The 2026 theme for Safeguarding Sunday is Love Protects. In 1 Corinthians 13, Paul reminds us that “love protects”. Safeguarding is not simply a task to complete, but an expression of Christian love.
When we love someone, protecting them comes naturally. Just as we instinctively seek to keep family and friends safe, we are called to show that same care within our churches and communities. Paul places protection alongside patience and kindness as a defining characteristic of love, reminding us that love protects, always.

Whether your church chooses to dedicate an entire service on 15th November to safeguarding or include a shorter moment of reflection within worship, Safeguarding Sunday offers a meaningful opportunity to engage with this vital aspect of church life.
