Bishop David Joins St Francis Pilgrimage for Service at Gorton Monastery

Members of the Society of St Francis are undertaking a peace pilgrimage across England this summer to mark the 800th anniversary of the death of St Francis of Assisi.

Beginning on 17th July in Alnmouth, Northumberland, the pilgrimage passed through our diocese over the weekend, and on Saturday morning, Bishop David Walker joined pilgrims for a service at Gorton Monastery. The gathering brought together people from across Greater Manchester to reflect on the life and witness of St Francis and the continuing significance of pilgrimage as a journey of faith. As one of the region’s most distinctive Franciscan landmarks, Gorton Monastery provided a fitting setting for prayer, worship and fellowship as pilgrims paused on their journey.

Bishop David said:

“It was deeply moving to gather with people who share my deep appreciation for St Francis and to give thanks for the profound impact he has had on my life and ministry. St Francis’ example continues to inspire me and Christians around the world to live with humility, compassion and a deep concern for God’s creation.”

Pilgrimage in the Spotlight

The event comes as pilgrimage is being highlighted nationally by the Church of England through the Pilgrim Places, Holy Lives campaign. On the Everyday Faith app, daily reflections invite people to explore the stories of English saints and sacred places, encouraging Christians to see their own lives as part of a continuing journey of faith.

Churches, cathedrals and individuals are also being encouraged to share their own stories of pilgrimage online this summer. The Church of England’s national social media campaign invites people to post photos, videos and reflections using the hashtag #PilgrimPlaces, showcasing places and experiences that have shaped their faith journeys.
