Supporting Vocations

Whether you are just starting to explore a vocation or are already actively discerning what God is leading you, our Vocations Team is here to support you.

Have you ever wondered whether God might be calling you to ministry?

Whether you are just beginning to explore a vocation or are already actively discerning God’s call, our Vocations Team is here to support you. You can contact the team at any stage of your journey for a conversation about your calling. Alongside one-to-one support, the diocese offers a range of groups, events and resources to help people explore their next steps.

Led by the Revd Canon Rachel Watts, the team accompanies people discerning a wide range of vocations, including ordained ministry and licensed lay ministry. They can help you to reflect on where God may be calling you and how you can use your gifts in the service of the Church and your community.

Join the Ministry Exploration Group

The Ministry Exploration Group, formerly known as the Vocations Support Group, brings together people who are discerning a vocation, and provides a welcoming space to share experiences, ask questions, reflect together and support one another on the journey.

Whether you are just beginning to sense a calling, actively exploring your options, or already exercising some form of ministry and trying to work out what comes next, all are welcome. Meetings are informal and provide an opportunity to learn from others who are on a similar path. For further information, contact the Revd Canon Anne Edwards.

Come to our Vocations Day

Another opportunity to explore your calling is the upcoming Vocations Day at St John’s House, Bury. The event will provide an opportunity to meet members of the Vocations Team, speak with people serving in a wide variety of ministry roles, hear from our Director of Vocations, Rachel Watts, and take part in interactive workshops designed to help you reflect on where God may be leading you.

Exploring Vocations in The Society Tradition

For men who are considering ordained ministry in Society parishes, a new Society Vocations Group is being offered this year. As part of our diocese’s vocations provision, the group will provide support for those discerning ministry within the Society tradition. Find out more here.

Speaking about the opportunities available, the Revd Canon Rachel Watts, Director of Vocations said:

“Exploring a vocation is an exciting and prayerful journey, and no one needs to do it alone. Across the Diocese of Manchester we offer a range of opportunities to help people discern God’s call, including the Ministry Exploration Group, Vocations Day, mentoring, conversations with the Vocations Team and, for men exploring ordained ministry in the Society tradition, the Society Vocations Group.

Each offers something slightly different, helping people access the support, encouragement and fellowship that best meets their needs as they explore where God may be leading them. Together, they provide a rich network of support for people at every stage of their journey.”
