Welcoming Students During Freshers’ Week

It’s been a busy Freshers’ Week at the University of Manchester with thousands of new students arriving in the city, meaning it’s been all hands on deck for the university chaplaincy teams to ensure they receive a warm welcome.

It has been a busy Freshers’ Week at the University of Manchester with thousands of new students arriving in the city, meaning it’s been all hands on deck for the university chaplaincy teams to ensure they receive a warm welcome.

To help students settle into university life and connect with local church communities, Jamie Mackenzie, Lead Anglican Chaplain to the Central Manchester Universities, organised a Church of England welcome stall staffed by local clergy and lay volunteers.

Meanwhile, Revd Canon Andrea Jones and Wayne Darbyshire, Chaplains to St Anselm Hall in Victoria Park, were on hand to distribute welcome bags to new arrivals ahead of the student Welcome Service with Sing My Soul this Sunday. St Chrysostom’s, Victoria Park, also arranged a stall providing free kitchen ware to local students. Over 50 students turned up and were supplied with pots, pans, cutlery and more to help them get settled into their university accommodation.

Helping students find a church community has been a key focus this week, and Jamie has been working with James Newman, the diocese’s Digital Content Lead in the Communications Team, to create a handy guide to churches in and around Manchester city centre. The guide was distributed to students to help them discover a church in Manchester where they can worship and belong during their time at university.
