Year 6 Leavers’ Services Fill Cathedral with Music and Prayer

Last week, Manchester Cathedral was filled with thousands of children who had gathered for our annual Year 6 Leavers’ Services. Organised by the Diocesan Board of Education, eight services were held over four days, welcoming almost 5,000 pupils, teachers and governors from Church of England primary schools.

This year’s theme focused on Jesus’ promise of “life in all its fullness”, encouraging pupils to embrace the opportunities that lie ahead. We were delighted to be joined by our guest speaker – renowned children’s author Bob Hartman.

The Cathedral came alive with singing, dancing and worship while colourful paper chains decorated the building, each link carrying a prayer written by a pupil, forming a powerful visual reminder of their hopes and dreams.

Pupils enthusiastically joined in uplifting songs led by iSingPOP, while Year 7 students offered practical advice and words of encouragement about the transition to secondary school, helping to reassure those preparing for the move. The services provided a meaningful opportunity for children to celebrate all they have achieved during their primary years, while reminding them that God will continue to guide and accompany them on the journey ahead.

As another generation of pupils prepares to move on to secondary school, we pray that these young people carry with them the faith and confidence they shared at Manchester Cathedral.
