A Day Inspired by St Chad

Members of a parish in the north west of Rochdale enjoyed a day of learning, reflection and worship centred on the life and legacy of St Chad of Mercia, the first in a series exploring the stories and spiritual wisdom of Christian saints and influential figures from across the centuries.

The day began with a morning gathering at St Michael’s Bamford and St Paul’s Norden, where people reflected on St Chad’s ministry and considered the importance of place, hallowed ground and the lessons his life still offers today. Particular attention was given to St Chad’s humility, simplicity and devotion to serving others.

The celebrations continued in the evening as Breathe, the Mission Community’s worship group, gathered around a firepit for an informal time of worship and fellowship. The group sang praises, offered prayers, toasted marshmallows and explored St Chad’s story together in a relaxed and welcoming setting.

As part of the evening, a Clipping Service was used to bless the space, and participants marked the grounds of St Michael’s with words of blessing written in chalk, expressing prayers for the church, community and all who visit the site.

This event is the first in a series focusing on inspiring Christian figures. Future sessions will explore the lives and faith of St Brigid, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Simone Weil and St Francis of Assisi.

Reflecting on the day, Revd Jason Powell spoke of the joy of gathering people together in creative and meaningful ways, demonstrating how ancient stories of faith can continue to inspire worship, discipleship and community life today.
