ALM Authorisation Service

On Saturday, our diocesan community gathered for the annual service of celebration for Authorised Lay Ministry (ALM), a joyful occasion celebrating the dedication, diversity, and vital work of lay leaders across Greater Manchester and Rossendale.

Friends, family, and supporting clergy joined together to support 35 candidates stepping into authorised ministry, alongside existing ALMs renewing their commitment to their parishes and communities. The service offered a meaningful space to bless, recommission, and give thanks for ministries of all shapes and sizes active throughout the diocese.

The service was led by the Bishop of Bolton, Rt Revd Dr Matthew Porter, with the Venerable Simon Cook, recently licensed as Archdeacon of Bolton, preaching. Drawing on the story of Samuel, Archdeacon Simon encouraged everyone present to remain attentive and open to God’s call in their everyday lives and communities.

Following the making and renewal of ALM promises, a key milestone was marked with the commissioning of four Chaplains to the ALM Community:

• Revd Libby Greenhalgh
• Amit Chawhan
• Ima Lomax
• Revd Kathreen Shahbaz

In their new roles, the chaplains will provide ongoing pastoral support, prayer, and encouragement to ALMs serving across our deaneries, further strengthening our shared network of lay leadership.

Authorised Lay Ministry plays an essential role in the mission of the Diocese of Manchester, equipping local people to lead in areas such as worship, pastoral care, mission, and youth and children’s work.
