Swanwick Conference: A Space for Prayer and Renewal

Clergy and lay leaders gathered at The Hayes Conference Centre in Swanwick this week for three days of reflection, fellowship, and learning, exploring the rhythm of prayer in our leadership.
Bishop David welcomed everyone to the conference and led the opening worship. During this time, he held before God all those affected as the region marked the 30th anniversary of the Manchester bombing, giving thanks for the resilience and spirit shown across the diocese.

The first day provided space to reflect on how we place prayer at the heart of ministry. Delegates were encouraged by the thought-provoking insights of Dr Johannes Hartl, followed by a range of seminars and gatherings exploring different approaches to prayer.
In the evening, Bishop Matthew continued this exploration, guiding participants through an “A to Z of Prayer”, before Revd Canon Grace Thomas led Compline, drawing the day to a peaceful close.

Throughout the conference, everyone enjoyed spending time together, catching up with friends and enjoying the calm and welcoming surroundings of Swanwick.

On the second day, the afternoon marketplace offered an opportunity to explore a variety of stalls showcasing creative resources and to learn more about the diverse areas of ministry across the diocese and the wider Church. It also provided a welcome opportunity to pause, enjoy the sunshine, and reconnect with friends and colleagues.

We were delighted to be joined by Bishop Sophie Jelley, who led a session on prayers of abundance and later guided reflections on how prayer can support and sustain mission. Her contributions were both thoughtful and inspiring, helping to connect the themes of prayer and growth in ministry.

Another highlight was the presence of delegations from link dioceses in Tampere, Namibia, and Lahore. Their participation brought a valuable global perspective and deepened the sense of shared life within the wider Church.

Across the three days, the conference offered space to slow down, listen, and be renewed. Rooted in prayer and looking outward in mission, we hope that clergy and lay people left encouraged and equipped for their leadership in the months ahead.
We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who attended for making the conference such a meaningful and enjoyable time together.
