External Funding Options


There are many external funding streams available to support your parish projects, from building repairs and community initiatives to heritage conservation and clergy wellbeing. Explore the funding options below to find those that best match your needs.

Open 4 Community is an external funding search facility which is free for parishes to use. It is an excellent tool and we would encourage all parishes to register and use it on a regular basis to get maximum benefit for your parish. It provides help and advice on a variety of areas including: bursaries, sabbaticals, education and training; children of clergy; clergy spouse/retired clergy; debt assistance; general assistance with hardship; health; holidays; and vocational grants.

The Benefact Trust provides grants to churches and Christian charities across the UK and Ireland, supporting building improvements, community projects, and faith-based initiatives.

Veolia funds projects that enhance community spaces and the natural environment. Applications follow a three-step process which is detailed on the website.

Manchester Airport Community Trust Fund supports community and environmental projects within a 10-mile radius of Manchester Airport, offering grants up to £3,000. This fund is often undersubscribed.

Biffa provides grants of £10,000–£75,000 to not-for-profit groups near landfill sites, supporting projects which focus on one of these four themes: community spaces, cultural facilities, recreation, and nature recovery.

The Garfield Weston Foundation supports UK charities across various sectors, including welfare, youth, environment, education, arts, heritage, and faith. They offer flexible grants to cover running costs, activities, capital projects, and more.

The Henry Smith Foundation offers grants of £10,000+ to churches and charities promoting Anglican clergy wellbeing. Open to UK-based not-for-profits affiliated with the Church of England, Church in Wales, Scottish Episcopal Church, or Church of Ireland.

The Joseph Rank Trust supports Christian projects addressing practical, educational, and spiritual needs, and funds church property improvements. Offers capital grants and three-year core funding, with applications assessed individually.

Laing Family Trusts is a group of four Christian grant-making trusts supporting projects that promote faith, social welfare, youth development, and community engagement. Grants to build bridges between the Church, community, and those in need. Please note this is for new projects only, and can’t be used for maintenance of existing projects.

The Listed Places of Worship Grant Scheme covers VAT costs on repairs to listed places of worship, including work on windows, drainage, architecture, external and internal features, general building work, and professional fees.

The National Lottery Heritage Fund is for heritage projects from £10,000 to £10 million that connect people and communities to the UK’s past, from nature and historic buildings to cultural traditions and oral histories. Open to a wide range of interpretations of heritage.

The Jerusalem Trust is provided by the Sainsbury Family Charitable Trusts. It funds Christian charities and organisations which focus on evangelism, mission, education, and media. Grants are typically awarded at a regional or national scale.

National Lottery Awards for All provides grants from £300 to £20,000 for up to two years, supporting projects that strengthen communities, improve local spaces, help people reach their potential, or respond to cost of living challenges.

National Churches Trust supports Christian places of worship across the UK with a range of grants for repairs, maintenance, and improvements to church buildings, helping them stay open for worship and community use.

The Beaverbrook Foundation supports small charitable projects, particularly those preserving heritage buildings or responding to local appeals. Focuses on modest grants that can make a meaningful impact where funding is harder to secure.

Society of Antiquaries offers grants of £500–£5,000 to places of worship in the UK for conserving decorative features, monuments, and textiles.
