Our Structure
The Diocese of Manchester is presided over by the Rt Revd Dr David Walker, Bishop of Manchester, who is assisted by two suffragan bishops: the Rt Revd Mark Davies, Bishop of Middleton, and the Rt Revd Dr Matthew Porter, Bishop of Bolton.
The diocese comprises four archdeaconries:
- Bolton and Salford Archdeaconry, where the Archdeacon is the Ven Dr Rachel Mann
- Manchester Archdeaconry, where the Archdeacon is the Ven Karen Best
- Rochdale Archdeaconry, where the Archdeacon is the Ven Karen Smeeton
Across the archdeaconries, there are seven deaneries, each supported by an Area Dean, a Deanery Lay Chair, and a Deanery Transformation Support Officer.
Within each deanery, local parishes collaborate as mission communities, fostering mutual support and sharing ideas and resources. There are 33 mission communities across the diocese, each led by a Mission Community Leader who provides guidance to both the leadership team and the wider community.
The diocese is supported by the Diocesan Board of Finance and the Diocesan Board of Education, both based at St John’s House in Bury.
The mother church of the diocese is Manchester Cathedral, led by Dean Rogers Govender.
Manchester Diocese is part of the Northern Province of the Church of England, within the worldwide Anglican Communion.
