Easter
The Heart of the Christian Faith
Easter is the most joyful and significant celebration in the Christian calendar. It marks the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, three days after his crucifixion. It is a declaration that love is stronger than death, and hope is alive.
In the Diocese of Manchester, Easter is a time when churches across our towns and cities come alive with celebration, worship, and renewed purpose. From the quiet reflection of Holy Week to the joyful shouts of “Christ is risen!” on Easter morning, we walk through the story that changed the world.
Holy Week: Walking with Christ
The journey to Easter begins with Palm Sunday, when we remember Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem. It continues through the solemn days of Holy Week, as we reflect on the events leading to the cross.
- Maundy Thursday commemorates the Last Supper, where Jesus washed the disciples’ feet and shared bread and wine.
- Good Friday is a day of silence, sacrifice, and deep reflection as we remember the crucifixion.
- Holy Saturday holds the quiet waiting, the in-between.
Then comes Easter Sunday, the dawn of new creation, when the tomb is empty and the world is never the same again.
Celebrating Across the Diocese
Easter services take place in churches of all sizes across Greater Manchester and Rossendale. From sunrise services on hillsides to joyful gatherings in church buildings and community spaces, the Diocese proclaims together:
“Christ is risen. He is risen indeed. Alleluia!”
Whether you’re a regular churchgoer or just curious about the Christian story, you are warmly invited to join in. Every person, every background, every journey, this hope is for all.

Resurrection: Hope in a Broken World
Easter reminds us that death, violence, and despair do not have the final word. In a world longing for healing and justice, the risen Christ brings light into the darkness. We are invited to be people of resurrection, bringing peace, truth, and hope into our everyday lives.
