CHRISTIAN CALENDAR
Lent
Lent is a 40-day season of reflection, repentance, and renewal in the Christian calendar. It begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Saturday, the day before Easter Sunday. These 40 days (excluding Sundays) mirror the time Jesus spent fasting in the wilderness and are traditionally observed through prayer, self-denial, and acts of charity.
In the Diocese of Manchester, Lent is a time when churches, schools, and communities come together to focus on the heart of the Gospel – God’s love and grace through Jesus Christ. It’s a season of intentional slowing down, creating space to draw closer to God.
Ash Wednesday
Ash Wednesday services are held across the Diocese. Ashes, made by burning last year’s palm crosses, are placed on the foreheads of worshippers as a sign of repentance and mortality. “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”
Lent Courses & Groups
Many churches run Lent study groups, both in person and online, offering weekly reflections, Bible studies, or video-based discussions. These are great ways to grow in faith together.
Looking for a course? Check with your local parish or keep an eye on our Events page for diocesan resources and online sessions.
Acts of Generosity
During Lent, many parishes support local and global causes. This might include collecting for food banks, or arranging on fundraisers for Christian Aid, The Children’s Society, and other charities. Lent is a chance to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with God.
Ideas for Your Lenten Journey
- Fast from distractions – reduce screen time, or limit social media.
- Take up something good – a daily gratitude journal, extra prayer, or volunteering.
- Give generously – donate to a cause close to your heart.
- Walk with Jesus – join a Lent group or follow a reading plan through the Gospels.
Lent is not about “giving up” for the sake of it, but “giving over” your time, energy, and focus to God.
Resources
Each year, the national Church of England offers a range of resources, including Lenten reflections, family activity packs, and worship materials for use in churches, schools, and at home. Future resources will be listed on this page once they are available.
