Funerals
“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you.”
John 14:27 (NIV)
The Church of England provides guidance and support to help you through the difficult process of planning a funeral, along with a selection of prayers that you may find helpful, whether you are planning a funeral, going to a funeral, unable to attend a funeral, or beginning the journey of grief. The church is here to offer comfort and care at your time of loss, regardless of whether you or the deceased have regularly attended church.
Your local vicar will be available to help with funeral arrangements and officiate at the service if you wish. The vicar will take the time to learn about your loved one’s life, ensuring that the service is a personal and fitting tribute. After the service, your vicar is available for continued support, offering a listening ear during the grieving process in the weeks and months ahead.
We believe that every person is uniquely special in God’s eyes, and our services reflect that, offering a meaningful way to honour the life of your loved one.
Funeral Planning
A Church of England funeral is personal, unique, and can be tailored to reflect your story. Planning your own funeral in advance can provide comfort to both you and your family, and making your wishes known can relieve your loved ones from difficult decisions when the time comes.
This Funeral Planning page is a helpful resource that guides you through the process of pre-planning your funeral. It offers practical advice on how to plan a service that reflects your life and values.
The Funeral Wishes Planner is a downloadable leaflet that allows you to record your preferences. It includes spaces for you to note things like the type of music and readings you’d like, as well as where you would like your service to take place. It also covers future memorial services or gatherings so you can plan for the ongoing celebration of your life.
While many decisions can be made in advance, remember that these plans are flexible and can be updated as your wishes evolve. It’s important to keep your funeral wishes separate from your will, as they may need to be accessed before your will is read. Keep your funeral plans in a safe place, and be sure to inform your close family and friends where they can find them.
