Who is Called by God?

When you hear the phrase “called by God”, what comes to mind?
Perhaps you think of the great stories of Scripture – God calling prophets, priests, or kings. Or maybe you think of figures throughout church history, or even someone whose faith has shaped your own journey.

But have you ever stopped to wonder if God is calling you?
Every Christian has a calling from God.

The word vocation simply means calling, and God calls us in many different ways throughout our lives:

  • In our families – as children, parents, spouses, siblings, or friends.
  • In our work – living out faith in the jobs, professions, or studies we undertake.
  • In our passions and communities – whether through sport, hobbies, or groups where we share life with others.
  • In the Church – as part of God’s family, where we are called to worship, serve, love, and sometimes to lead.

We are all called to be part of God’s mission in the world, in the everyday and the extraordinary.

Reflecting on your calling

Here in the Diocese of Manchester, we want to help every Christian explore their vocation. Over the coming months we’ll be sharing resources to help churches and individuals listen for God’s call – whether that’s in the here and now, or in new ways for the future.

Barriers to hearing the call

The Bible is full of people who said, “Surely not me, Lord.” And yet, God delights in calling those who feel too small, too unqualified, or too ordinary.

Many of us hesitate to take that first step. But time and again, people discover that sharing their sense of calling with someone they trust opens the door to encouragement, guidance, and reassurance.
